Mimi’s Story
Age at diagnosis: 5 years
Breed: Maltese
Mimi is a 5-year-old Maltese who was diagnosed with MUE/GME in January 2026. Before that, she had been a healthy and active dog. One evening after playing in the snow, she suddenly became lethargic, lost her balance, started walking as if she were drunk, and later was unable to stand due to impaired function of her right front and hind legs. Her condition deteriorated rapidly within a few hours.
Thanks to a prompt visit to a veterinary neurologist, the diagnosis was established approximately 48 hours after the first symptoms appeared. MRI and cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed inflammatory lesions in the cerebellum and the cervical spinal cord (C3–C4) and confirmed significant inflammation of the central nervous system characteristic of MUE/GME.
Mimi responded well to treatment with prednisolone - her appetite, energy level, and quality of life improved. Her condition is currently stable, although mild neurological deficits remain in her legs. She continues treatment and remains under the care of veterinary specialists.
Since the diagnosis, life for our entire family has changed. We closely monitor her condition, try to avoid stress and excessive exertion, and live with the constant fear of a relapse. At the same time, we have learned to appreciate every good day we have together with her.
Our family is originally from Ukraine, but we currently live in Hungary. Mimi was diagnosed and treated in Budapest, where she continues to receive specialist care.
